PGA Championship & RyderCup Redesign

In July 2019, the broadcasting rights for PGA Championship and Ryder Cup transitioned from Turner Sports to NBC. Subsequently, my team was assigned the responsibility of redesigning the websites and mobile apps for both the PGA Championship and Ryder Cup in preparation for the 2020 events

Problems

When I started the project, I saw that the old designs only cared about what the business needed, not what users needed. The PGA Championship and Ryder Cup websites and apps didn't match up well.

Goals

Implement solutions grounded in evidence, involving users to ensure a seamless web and app experience across both sites. Address and rectify any usability issues encountered during the process.

I kicked things off by crafting low-fidelity wireframes for both PGA and Ryder Cup. Collaborating closely with the Product Owner, we brainstormed layouts and ideas. Striving for consistency between the two sites, I managed to reuse around 90% of the same wireframes.

Following multiple iterations, we presented the designs to the broader team for feedback.

Designing the PGA Championship

Following the ideation phase, I delved into the design process, with my initial focus on the home pages for the PGA Championship. The website and mobile apps featured four distinct home states—Pre-event, Live, Post, and morning-after masters. Leveraging the existing brand guidelines for typography, I introduced new design components to achieve a cleaner and more streamlined UI.

Redesigning the RyderCup

Following the design work for the PGA Championship, my attention shifted to RyderCup. Similarly, I concentrated on elevating the user experience by adhering to best practices.

About the PGA Championship

Ryder Cup began in 1927 and is one of the premier sporting events in the world. The match-play competition features 24 of the best players from Europe and the United States go head-to-head in match play competition. Drama, tension, incredible golf, camaraderie and sportsmanship are served in equal measure, captivating an audience of millions around the world. It’s an event that transcends sport, yet remains true to the spirit of its founder, Samuel Ryder.
