Vehicle History Report

CARFAX is renowned for its detailed vehicle history reports. When a consumer considers purchasing a car, they can easily obtain a comprehensive report by purchasing it or asking the dealer.

This report covers key aspects like accident history, open recalls, previous owners, and service records, enabling users to make more informed decisions when buying a car.

Overview

While the History report has been a strong asset for our company, we strive to consistently emphasize the distinctive value of our data within the report. As part of my responsibilities, I focused on highlighting our accident and service data to ensure its prominence.

Defining the Problem

Before the design phase, we organized a design workshop to brainstorm strategies for highlighting our accident and service data. To ensure a user-centric approach, we first subjected the Vehicle History Report (VHR) to comprehensive user testing before diving into the workshop sessions.

In light of our research, the report contains a wealth of data, and both our consumers and dealers express a desire for a streamlined and more efficient way to access accident and service information.

Consumer & Dealer Pain Points

  • I want to get the accident and service information quickly

  • There’s a lot of data in the report and it can feel overwhelming

  • Dealers want to be able to access window stickers faster

During the session, we posed two pivotal questions: "How might we provide consumers and dealers with a more comprehensive summary of a vehicle's service history?" and "How might we offer consumers and dealers an improved summary of a vehicle's accident data?" These questions served as catalysts for innovative thinking, guiding the group toward strategic answers that address the core goals.

Design Jam

Post-workshop, we organized the sticky notes, setting the stage for a collaborative design jam amongst the entire team of designers. Before the jam, each designer independently selected two themes derived from the categorized notes as their focal points for ideation. Engaged in a focused and immersive session, everyone delved into the creative process, generating a plethora of innovative ideas.

Accident Focus Themes

Service Focus Themes

Below are the themes crafted by our team of designers. This approach proved exceptionally beneficial during meetings, providing stakeholders with valuable insights into our creative process. Within these collaborative sessions, stakeholders had the opportunity to express their preferences, offering constructive feedback on elements they appreciated and indicating their desired features in the designs. This iterative process not only fostered a transparent exchange of ideas but also provided me with valuable guidance and a clearer sense of direction.

Themes

This project has undergone numerous iterations and remains an ongoing project. We recently submitted three design options for user testing, and we eagerly anticipate receiving the updates from that process shortly. Meanwhile, I'd like to share some notable mentions that have contributed to the project's evolution.
